In the interest of faster and more automated carton production, many folding carton manufacturers are purchasing diecutting presses with blanking stations.
As many of you are aware, a blanking station in a diecutting press allows automatic separation of the die cut blank from the sheet. A diecutting press with blanking and stripping stations can convert stacked sheets into stacked diecut blanks, thereby eliminating the need for manual stripping operations.
Purchased blanking tools traditionally cost thousands of dollars and take anywhere from one to four weeks to produce. Therefore, purchased blanking tools are not feasible for most short run, quick turn-around jobs. The converter must make their own blanking tools by hand, or resort to manual stripping after diecutting.
Using Advanced Laser Dies' Flat Top Blanking Kits, our customers assemble their own flat-top blanking tool sets much more quickly and economically than if they had purchased prefabricated blanking tool sets.
Now our customers are using precision laser cut blanking tools that cost well under a thousand dollars and are ready in only 1-3 days. These kits easily assemble in plant and are ready to use within a few hours.

Just as a female stripping board allows scrap to be pushed through it, the flat-top board allows the cartons to be pushed through it. The pieces cut out of the flat-top board are used to make the "pushers" for the top blanker.
There are certain considerations in layout design that will determine if flat-top blanking is possible. The main ones are:
the customer has the Bobst "Flat Top Tool Frame".
there are blank size limitations
there must be gutters around the blanks.
Minimum gutter size is 1/4", 3/8" recommended.
Gutters of 1/2" wide are recommended by Bobst.
We have techniques to allow some common knifed areas.
The customer should keep a supply of re-usable presser bars for their blanker tools. By making the presser bars all the same length, they become interchangeable. This allows the cost to be spread over many years.
